The Rexcatering project lands in the Catalan capital thanks to Barcelona Activa
The Rexcatering project, created by the Residuo Cero Foundation, has arrived in Barcelona to implement its new food utilization system that makes surplus portions available to the population through a vending machine.
The system was presented on Friday at its first location in the Catalan capital, the Centre Obert Martí Codolar in Horta-Guinardó, and was attended by the Commissioner of Social Action of the Barcelona City Council, Sònia Fuertes, and representatives from the Plataforma Aprofitem els Aliments, Salesianos Social, Residuo Cero, and the center itself.
«This is an example of how we want to work on social policies in Barcelona,» said Fuertes, highlighting Rexcatering’s ability to combine innovation, improvement trajectory, and youth awareness.
SYSTEM
Rexcatering allows schools and catering centers to give purpose to their surplus through an unprecedented solution, promoting the reduction of waste and providing the population with access to quality food.
In addition to the vending machine itself, which offers cooked portions to vulnerable families for a symbolic price of 1 euro, Residuo Cero also supplies the kitchens with the necessary machinery to package the food and provides them with a computer system to optimize the process.
BARCELONA ACTIVA
The initiative has been implemented in Barcelona thanks to the Plataforma Aprofitem els Aliments, which acts as the representative of Residuo Cero in Catalonia and Andorra, and the funding from the Barcelona City Council through Barcelona Activa.
Specifically, it has been part of the ‘Impulsem el que fas 2024’ grants, which the City Council announced in June with its ninth call, making a total of 2.5 million euros available to the local economy.
