The evaluator council of the Elderly of Barcelona (CAGG) presented on Friday at its plenary session the commitment of Barcelona as a «friendly city» 2025-2035, with whom it affirmed to adapt its policies to the context of this sector of the population.

The council, presided over by the councilor of Neighborhood Plan, Lluís Rabel, warned that the Catalan capital has an increasingly diverse nationality», a reality that will have to adapt to continue being friendly to the elderly.

They stated that demographic changes force to accelerate the pace of adaptation of the city, because in the next 3 people will be over 60 years old, the majority will be over 80, and the number of centenarians and centenarians will increase.

In addition to adapting the city, they affirmed that the elderly are active agents in the process of approval and implementation of public policies, including friendship as a cross-cutting perspective.

«A friendly city is one that offers a space to live with dignity, that facilitates daily life and imposes our rights as citizens,» they said.

This perspective with The Enderly was born in Barcelona in 2009, after the creation of the same Cagg, which led to the recognition of the city as a member of the international network of friendly cities and communities in 2011.

In 2025, CAGG seeks to renew this commitment for the next decade, with which it aims to become an inspiration, as well as a tool for both entities, the administration and the citizenship to act to influence the adaptation of the city to all ages.

In this way, the Council requests its commitment to the Local Council of Barcelona, with the city’s entities and economic agents to address the main challenges that arise in building a friendly city for the elderly.

In this sense and, according to the WHO, CAGG emphasizes 7 areas of action: protection against inequalities, transportation and mobility, equity in the use of spaces and equipment, social relations and participation, among others.

Likewise, in the form of significant training in new technologies, continuous improvement in health, care, and welfare, and finally, housing to ensure decent living conditions as fundamental.
