- Barcelona will contribute 400,000 euros to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to support and ensure humanitarian aid to Palestinians who are currently refugees or suffering siege in occupied territories and in the Gaza Strip
- The mayor visited UNRWA warehouses in Amman on Monday, the heart of the humanitarian action aimed at Gaza to which Barcelona has been contributing steadily since 2012
- Statements by Jaume Collboni (in Catalan, audio-mp3)
During his official visit to Jordan, Mayor Jaume Collboni announced that Barcelona will double its financial contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to support the population of Gaza and Palestinian refugees, increasing from the current 200,000 € to 400,000 €.
For the Mayor of Barcelona, «the situation in the occupied territories and in the Gaza Strip is desperate because humanitarian aid with food and medicine has been blocked, and they cannot enter a territory that the United Nations has declared to be under the effects of famine. Barcelona joins the denunciation made by many countries and cities around the world for this fact and will also double its financial contribution from 200,000 € to 400,000 € for the purchase of medicines and food and to strengthen the health support for doctors and nurses in the strip. We not only denounce, but we will increase our support to the occupied territories and to the Gaza Strip in such dramatic moments.»
The Barcelona City Council has maintained a stable support line for the refugee population in Gaza since 2012. A collaboration that began with an initial contribution of 100,000 € annually, destined for the sending of emergency humanitarian aid and training programs in the health field. In 2024, this annual contribution was increased to nearly 200,000 €, after an extraordinary allocation of 300,000 € in 2023 due to the war context in the area.
The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, visited the warehouses of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) near Amman on Monday, the first day of his trip to Jordan. The mayor met with the UNRWA program director, Olaf Becker, who explained the difficulties in delivering humanitarian aid to the Gaza population given the current state of famine declared by the United Nations on Friday.
Collboni made the visit accompanied by the Spanish ambassador to the Hashemite country, Miguel de Lucas González, and by the Deputy Mayor responsible for International Relations and Human Rights areas, Maria Eugènia Gay.
Currently, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East provides assistance, protection, and advocacy to over five million Palestinian refugees living in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the occupied Palestinian territory (Gaza Strip and West Bank).
