The Barcelona City Council will be involved in 21,770 meters of bike lanes over the next few years to improve connectivity and cycling infrastructure, adding to the 20,640 meters already completed, totaling 42,410 meters. These actions, including new bikes and existing improvements, aim to make mobility safer and more efficient in this mode of transportation.
The planned actions will be carried out in most districts with the goal of both expanding the current network with new links and improving cycling infrastructure in areas requested by cyclists, such as Montjuïc or Diagonal in the Sant Martí section. The infrastructure improvements mainly respond to the need to reduce bike lanes on the sidewalk, which has an impact on greater mobility efficiency for cycling and particularly on pedestrian safety.
At a press conference, Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet emphasized that «Barcelona has one of the most important cycling networks in the country, and we want to continue growing and improving sustainable mobility.» «What we are looking for with this plan is for Barcelona to have a wider and safer cycling infrastructure, so all actions are planned from this perspective,» said Bonet. Urban planning, ecological transition, urban services, and housing.
Among the planned actions, 12,390 meters of bike lanes and 9,380 meters of existing sidewalk lanes will be improved, part of new urban developments or already in progress, as well as exclusivity. These actions will be added to 15.4 km of new bike lanes already integrated in this area and the improvement of 5.24 km, within the strategy to improve connectivity and infrastructure. Currently, the Barcelona Bike Network is 268 km long.
In addition to the new lanes and infrastructure improvements planned for this term, the municipal government will address bike mobility in two areas over the years. First, the local council’s commitment is to have the bike infrastructure project at Plaça de Catalunya completed by the end of the term to open a new safe bike connection between Ciutat Vella and Eixample. Secondly, another area of focus will be to complete the project for the connection between the walkway of Franca area and Plaça de Les Drassanes through the port of Ronda Del, an axis that will allow the Marina to approach the city center.
New bike lanes will create axes to improve cycling connectivity. Notably, a new bidirectional lane of 6.6 kilometers on Montjuïc will connect key facilities on the mountain, such as Poble Espanyol, the Olympic ring, the Joan Miró Foundation, and the gardens of Laribal, Joan Brossa, Joan Maragall, or Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer.
Regarding the seafront, surgical actions are planned, such as connecting the Bourbon bike lane with the construction lane of 600 meters through Laietana, an intervention that will connect the post office and the diallo. The work consists of extending 160 meters in both directions and lowering the sidewalk under the wall for 320 meters of one-way direction to Idrissa Diallo, allowing Barceloneta to connect with the Eixample and setting up a bike axis between the coast and Gràcia.
In this regard, the renovation works of Jardinets de Gràcia have already begun to include a small performance of 75 meters that will significantly improve connectivity between Eixample and Gràcia. The works will extend the road that is currently interrupted on Carrer Mitjà until it connects with Carrer Bonavista and the pacified network of Vila de Gràcia.
Additionally, in the Sea-Mountain axis, there is the bike lane on Carrer Badajoz in Poblenou, which will be built in the renovation works of the entire street. The new lane will cover its 1.6 kilometers, creating a new axis connecting with the existing lane on Independència and forming a direct connection between the coast and Guinardó, crossing the neighborhoods of Poblenou and the Camp de la Capa.
Improvements to the diagonal bike path will continue beyond Glòries, particularly in the Sant Martí district, in the Poblenou neighborhoods between Glòries and La Mar Bella. After the transformation of the diagonal by the tram works between Verdaguer and Glòries, including the construction of a new segregated bike lane, the goal is to improve this axis further beyond Glòries. This long-term intervention, requested by the cycling group, will involve the construction of 4.6 km of two new one-way bike lanes between Carrer Ciutat de Granada and Carrer Josep Pla de Calzada, replacing the two sidewalk bike lanes, to be carried out along the central parts of the daily. The new infrastructure will provide safety for cyclists, especially pedestrians and tram users, as the current bike lanes are adjacent to the Trambesò stops. This performance, expected to be completed by early 2027, will renovate and improve the entire cycling route along the diagonal from Francesc Macià to the forum.
Furthermore, at the other end of the diagonal, the connection with Esplugues de Llobregat will be improved with the construction of a new two-way bike lane, with the first phase of the works expected to be completed by the end of the year.
More bike routes and safer ones will be provided in Horta-Guinardó, Example of L’Am, Sant Andreu, Nou Barris, Les Corts, and Sants-Montjuïc. In 2026, the cycling axis of Ronda del Guinardó will be completed in the section between Carrer Vinyals and Carrer Perdons de Torre Dels, with a new lane of 390 meters. This new infrastructure will complete the lane on the road between Carrer Cartagena and Carrer Vinyals and between Carrer Perdons de Torre Dels and Passeig Maragall.
In Eixample, a new bike lane will also be built on Carrer de la Marina, between Carrer Ausiàs Marc and Carrer Diputació, replacing the 450 meters in the direction of the single sidewalk lanes.
During the redevelopment of the Sagrada Familia, a 230-meter section of two-lane bike lanes between Carrer Sardenya and Carrer Lepant will be built to improve both infrastructure efficiency and pedestrian safety.
One of the highlighted areas of cycling infrastructure will be the neighborhoods of Sant Andreu and Nou Barris, especially associated with the transformation of Avinguda Meridiana between Felip II and Fabra I Puig. The redevelopment of Meridiana will involve a new two-way lane that will replace the sidewalk lanes, covering the distance between Felip II and Fabra
