Two jewels of Catalan architecture, the Historic Site of Sant Pau and the Sagrada Familia Temple, will become the unique stage that will host the official presentation of the cycling teams participating in the Tour de France on July 2, 2026. This was announced today at an event that also served to welcome the Tour de France trophy to the city of Barcelona once the 2025 edition was over. This trophy, which has just arrived from Paris, will be installed in the Olympic and Sports Museum Joan Antoni Samaranch in the coming weeks, where all cycling enthusiasts can come and admire the award.
The team presentation in Barcelona will mark the start of the 2026 Grand Départ, which will run until July 6, 2026 through the capital and various Catalan municipalities such as Tarragona and Granollers.
The Tour de France represents tradition and innovation and, with this presentation, it will merge with Catalan modernism, an artistic and architectural movement that, together with Cerdà’s urban planning, shaped the city that expanded beyond its walls in the late 19th century. The architectural gems of Lluís Domènech i Muntaner and Antoni Gaudí will be the connecting axis where the best cyclists in the world will parade over a 900-meter route along Gaudí Avenue, a unique promenade that breaks Cerdà’s grid to visually unite these two monuments.
The event, open to the entire population, aims to be a great celebration where the best cycling race in the world will have as its stage the two most emblematic, iconic, and historical spaces of the city for its presentation. The goal is for this event to be the most spectacular in the history of the race and to become an unforgettable experience for fans and cyclists.
The starting point, the Historic Site of Sant Pau, will be the epicenter where the Tour’s grand caravan will be set up and the starting point of a team-by-team parade that will end in front of the Sagrada Familia Temple where the main stage will be located. In this location, the official presentation of all the teams participating in the Tour de France 2026 will take place.
Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni stated, «Barcelona will make the best presentation of Tour de France teams ever seen, and will do so by combining sport and architecture, two of the elements that make our city unique. It will be a unique presentation and we are convinced that it will be the most special or the best that the Tour de France has ever had in its history. The central idea is to unite a sports event, such as the Tour de France, with a cultural, architectural, urban event of world-class level, such as the World Capital of Architecture 2026.»
«The event will be, essentially, a moment of city pride where we will showcase two jewels of architecture and Catalan modernism connecting monuments that are UNESCO World Heritage sites. From Sant Pau to the Sagrada Familia. From Domènech i Montaner to Gaudí. From master to apprentice. Very few cities in the world can do this,» added the Mayor, highlighting that «in this team presentation, we will show the passion of Barcelona residents for sports in general and for cycling in particular. Barcelona loves the bicycle. It loves it as a sport and as a means of transportation. So the countdown begins and in Barcelona we are already prepared to experience the Tour 2026 with intensity.»
Barcelona, world capital of cycling
With the official start of the Tour, one of the top 10 international sports events, Barcelona will become the world capital of cycling. The Tour de France is the most important cycling competition in the world, where fans of this sport can enjoy a unique event with the participation of the best international stars, being one of the sports events with the most international follow-up.
As announced a few months ago, the grand start of the Grand Départ Barcelona 2026 of the Tour will take place two days after this presentation event, on July 4, on a circuit in the city. It will be a team time trial on a 19.7-kilometer circuit starting at the Forum Park and ending at Montjuïc Mountain. The riders will start the stage from the city’s waterfront, pass by the Sagrada Familia, and reach the final stretch with two successive climbs to the Olympic Stadium at Montjuïc.
The second stage, starting in Tarragona and ending in Barcelona, will take place on July 5 with a route of 178 kilometers. The first part of the route, very flat, will pass through municipalities such as Torredembarra, El Vendrell, Vilanova i la Geltrú, and Sitges before reaching Begues and subsequently finishing in Barcelona. Like the initial stage, the passage through the city will end with a final circuit with the ascent to Montjuïc Castle crowned three times. Finally, the third stage will start on July 6 from Granollers on a definitive route that will be announced soon.
After regularly hosting the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, one of the most historic cycling competitions in the world, as well as the Vuelta Masculina 2023 and the Vuelta Femenina 2025, Barcelona will close the circle by hosting the Grand Départ of the Tour de France. After Copenhagen in 2022, Bilbao in 2023, and Florence in 2024, the Tour will make Barcelona the global epicenter of cycling in 2026.
