The elderly in Barcelona are once again invited to visit museums thanks to the fifth edition of the cycle ‘The museums are waiting for you’, which will start next October and run until June 2026. This initiative is aimed at users of the municipal Civic Centers and Senior Spaces and the VinclesBCN service.
The objective of the cycle is to make known, disseminate, and bring the elderly of the city closer to the museums of Barcelona and other neighboring municipalities. Additionally, it aims to show participants that museums are not elitist spaces reserved for certain groups, but places to learn, have fun, and socialize with others.
This year’s novelties include the project consolidating for the next 4 years and 5 more museums being added to the proposal with an increase in the offering reaching 80 activities. In total, 38 museums are participating in the cycle (19 in Barcelona and 19 outside the city) and about 1,000 people will be able to participate in a total of eighty activities (60 in Barcelona and 20 outside the city). The proposals of ‘The museums are waiting for you’ will be in-person and virtual, with the former having a reduced cost ranging from one to five euros and online visits being free of charge.
The different activities of the cycle do not follow a common thread, but each museum has organized its own proposal, such as virtual tours, workshops with antique objects, memory games, or dialogues through works or collections. However, all visits share the characteristic feature of being very participatory and promoting conversation among participants.
The cycle ‘The museums are waiting for you’ originated as an initiative of the Museums and Accessibility Working Group and is currently a collaboration between the Barcelona City Council, the Museums and Accessibility Working Group, and the Network of local museums of the Barcelona Provincial Council.
