The Consell Assesor de la Gent Gran (CAGG) of the Barcelona City Council has released the document ‘Compromís Barcelona amigable amb les persones grans’ to join forces between entities, administrations, and institutions on the challenges faced by the elderly and to build a «city for all ages.»
In a few years, one in three people in Barcelona will be over 60 years old, so action must be taken to «modify physical environments and adapt them to the population,» the City Council reported in a statement this Sunday.
This Commitment is, therefore, a pact of social collaboration to «enhance the autonomy of the elderly» and it is also planned to create mechanisms for participation so that they themselves can be part of the development of public policies.
The document proposes 8 areas of action: rights and ageism, transportation and mobility, spaces and uses, social relationships and participation, culture and lifelong learning, health, care and well-being, and living conditions and housing.
These areas arise from the proposal of the World Health Organization (WHO) in its Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities, of which Barcelona has been a part since 2011.
LOS RETOS POR DELANTE
The Consell Assesor de la Gent Gran proposes various concrete measures such as creating a fully accessible public transportation network, ensuring spaces and facilities with a variety of uses, and putting a stop to the «touristification» of neighborhoods.
On the other hand, they also advocate for reducing social inequalities in health and paying special attention to improving living conditions in housing.
