Esquius asserts that the day of the teams, the Mossos are a priori fight against multirecidivism

The chief commissioner of the Mossos d’Esquadra, Miquel Esquius, has stated that crimes in Catalonia have decreased by 5% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the first quarter of 2024.

He spoke at the National Law of the Squads 2025, an event held this Friday at the International Convention Center of Barcelona (CCIB) and chaired by the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, along with the Minister of Interior and Public Security, Núria Parlon.

Esquius has stated that the Catalan police prioritize the fight against the scourge of multirecidivism or multidification that must be attacked from different areas,» according to him.

Upon arrival at CCIB, the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, accompanied by Parlon, the Director General of the police, Josep Lluís Trapero, and Esquius, reviewed the Guard of Honors and the Mossos and greeted the commissioners of the force.

Actions against Multirecidivism

Taking into account the issue of Multirecidivism, Esquius has defended more cross-cutting actions, the expansion of specific teams, the improvement of knowledge of the problem, communication with the courts, and coordination with local police.

«This is more agile, flexible, and cross-cutting. To have a broader perspective of the causes to bring about change and to be able to neutralize the criminals,» he explained.

«More complex» Society

The chief commissioner highlighted the current context as a «more complex, multicultural, and diverse society among its origins,» a factor that is more of a value and strength than a problem and fragility, in a social context that is advancing at a rapid pace, literally.

Therefore, given this situation, he called for «activation and reflection, nerve and prudence, and observation and listening,» in order to recognize the good work of the entire police force that affects and works to combat criminal acts.

As challenges for the future, he advocated improving the attention to victims of gender violence with the creation of a women’s commission and restoring the nearest patrol.

Finally, he sent a message of optimism to citizens as, according to him, there are now more Mossos than ever with a total of 19,000 agents, a number that will soon rise to 25,000 to express his «firm» commitment to Catalonia and its security and coexistence.
