The winners of the educational program «Commerce and Schools» will illustrate 240,000 bookmarks this Jordi: press service
On Monday, the Point 2025 book event took place in the hall, presided over by Raquel Gil, councilor for commerce, restoration, and markets at the Barcelona City Council. These awards recognize the best illustrations by students from educational centers in the city within the «Commerce and Schools» program, which started in 2006 and was promoted by the Department of Commerce, Restoration, and Food. The aim of the program is to bring schools closer to neighborhood shops to rediscover local commerce and recognize its value.
Through visual language, students express their vision of local commerce and the city. In this academic year, 38 schools and over 4,100 students participated in the initiative.
«All of you are already consumers. Perhaps through your families for now, but one day you will have to make purchasing decisions, which involves knowing who the merchants are, how the shops operate, and taking responsibility as buyers, shaping the city model we want,» said councilor Raquel Gil to the students. «I encourage you to keep drawing the city and sharing with us, so you can see commerce and the city as a whole,» added Gil, who also thanked the merchants for their participation in the project. «Neighborhood commerce is one of the elements created by the city, creating the neighborhood, providing a sense of trust and security. Shops are also windows to discover other realities and neighbors offering diversity,» she said.
From all the participating works, the jury awarded the top 32 drawings classified into eight categories based on the students’ educational level: the second cycle of early childhood education, primary school, primary primary cycle, 1st and 2nd of ESO (Obligatory Secondary Education), 3rd and 4th of ESO, Baccalaureate, and Vocational Training. These drawings were exhibited today at the city hall.
Finally, the 16 most esteemed works by the jury are displayed in 240,000 bookmarks distributed throughout the city, coinciding with the Jordi day, through the collaboration of axes and commercial associations. This initiative not only promotes the talent of young artists but also reaffirms the importance of the connection between local commerce and educational centers in the city.
Through the «Commerce and Schools» educational program, guided tours of shops, commercial workshops, emblematic routes (based on geocaching to discover the cultural, social, and historical value of a commercial unit), neighborhood resource gymkhanas, and digital activities have been promoted. These activities are aimed at students from the city, from the second cycle of early childhood education to higher education and baccalaureate cycles, from public, subsidized, and private schools.
