ERC acusa a Illa de prioritzar la monarquia enlloc d’atendre les inundacions a Tarragona

Albert requests the Government to «focus on helping the affected municipalities»

The Deputy General Secretary of Communication and spokesperson for ERC, Isaac Albert, has accused the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, of showing «deference to the monarchy» instead of addressing the problems caused by the floods in Terres de l’Ebre (Tarragona) from Catalonia this Sunday.

During a press conference on Monday, he referred to Illa’s presence at events in Madrid on the occasion of the Day of the Hispanic Heritage, from which other regional presidents abstained due to the forecast of heavy rain.

«Yesterday President Illa should not have gone to the Royal Palace and should have been attentive to what was happening in Catalonia from the Palau de la Generalitat, and if necessary, go down to the south of the country. Without a doubt, yesterday the president was not where he should have been,» Albert criticized.

The Republican spokesperson argued that Illa should have been «at the forefront in Catalonia» and recalled that other regional presidents did not attend these events and stayed in their territories.

He urged the Government to «focus on helping the affected municipalities», where he believes it will be difficult to return to normalcy after this episode of heavy rains.

Sources from the Government have informed Europa Press that Illa arrived from Madrid to Barcelona at 5:20 p.m. and connected to the meeting of the Operational Coordination Center of Catalonia (Cecat) remotely from his home.

REASSESSMENT

Albert has stated that, in the face of episodes of heavy rains and fires, Catalonia needs a reassessment of how it has been urbanistically organized: «We have built where we should not have. What is happening can clearly end up affecting human lives,» he warned.

Asked if they would be willing to argue that buildings in risk areas should be demolished, Albert responded that «it is evident that some decisions must be made,» although he did not specify if that will be ERC’s stance.
