Catalunya has exceeded the 90-90-90 goals set by UNAIDS: currently, 94% of people infected with HIV are aware of their status, of which 93% are in treatment, and 96% of those on treatment have an undetectable viral load.
However, it is estimated that more than 36,000 people are living with HIV in Catalonia, and 5.8% are unaware of their status.
Decrease in cases
Catalonia is experiencing a slight decrease in the number of newly reported HIV infections. In 2024, 487 new diagnoses were reported. Of these new cases, 82.1% were in men, with an average age of 39 years among those diagnosed.
This situation is attributed to the expansion of treatment, the increase in the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP), and the wide range of interventions deployed in all areas during these years.
The main mode of transmission has been through sexual contact: 53.6% of new diagnoses occurred in men who have sex with men, and 44.5% were in heterosexual men and women.
