The Partit Popular has warned about the lack of energy alternatives that guarantee the supply of electricity to Tarragona before the announced nuclear shutdown, at the roundtable organized by the Populars in l’Hospitalet del Infant (Tarragona) this Saturday afternoon.
The party has stated that nuclear power plants are a «vital economic and energy pillar» for the province and that their closure would affect, literally, thousands of families and the future of municipalities such as l’Hospitalet de l’Infant, Vandelló, and Ascó (Tarragona), as reported this Sunday in a statement.

A viable energy transition
The coordinator of relations with the Nuclear Safety Council and deputy in Congress, Guillermo Mariscal, has questioned «the sustainability of the energy system if the Catalan units that produce almost 60% of the energy in Catalonia are closed.»
«We are in favor of renewable energy sources and, furthermore, Nuclear does not emit polluting gases and is the unit capable of producing 24 hours a day,» said the deputy, who has requested, literally, realistic solutions to ensure a viable energy transition.
The Minister of the Nuclear Safety Council, Javier Díes, said that «nuclear centers in Spain invest around 30 million euros per year» to guarantee the maintenance, improvement, and modernization of reactors.
The president of the Nuclear Forum, Ignacio Araluce, emphasized that nuclear power should «continue operating until they have technology to store solar and wind energy.»
