In recent years, the Local Council of Barcelona has made significant changes to improve the efficiency of water use and to increase the use of alternative water resources, mainly at the groundwater level.
Indeed, in 2024, 51.75% of the total consumption of urban services and maintenance of public spaces was attributed to water.
Municipal services that consume the most water include municipal buildings, watering of parks and gardens, road cleaning, and others such as the zoo, municipal markets, or street cleaning. Among urban services, in 2024, considering drought restrictions, water consumption was distributed as follows.
In the past two years, the Local Council of Barcelona has accelerated actions aimed at water use in the city. Examples include extending the groundwater level, improving irrigation systems, or enhancing urban drainage systems in green spaces. All these measures and efforts, along with the economic sector, are key focus areas included in the climate plan.
The first female mayor, Laia Bonet, stated that she had done her homework.
Apart from municipal consumption, internal consumption and industrial and commercial consumption have decreased. The high water supply to the city averaged 164 equivalent liters per day between January and December 2024, well below the current drought phase threshold of 250 equivalent liters per day per inhabitant. Last year, the average was 172 liters per inhabitant per day equivalent. As for internal consumption, it was 96.7 liters per inhabitant equivalent per day, while the previous year it was 98.7 liters.
A total of 88.8 hm3 of drinking water was consumed in all sectors of the city by 2024.
Comparing the consumption with 25 years ago, the data shows a 22% decrease in water consumption, while the population increased by 13%.
In Barcelona, the drought warning was issued in November 2022. Since then, water use restrictions have been maintained, always in line with the current phase. Starting from last June, when the flexible measures are in place, Barcelona has been on high alert again.
