The Department of Justice and Democratic Quality will invest over 7 million euros in the next two years in improvement works at the Quatre Camins Penitentiary Center, located in La Roca del Vallès (Barcelona), as reported by the department in a statement.
The investment was announced on Monday, coinciding with the visit of the Minister of Justice, Ramon Espadaler, to this prison, and among the actions are rehabilitation and reform works in the infirmary, primary care, pharmacy, and the «Living in Digital!» project.
Opened in 1989, Quatre Camins was the first penitentiary facility built by the Generalitat since assuming penal execution powers in 1984 and currently houses 1,168 men, mostly convicts (only 73 are in pretrial detention).
Espadaler also visited on Monday the Youth Penitentiary Center in La Roca del Vallès (Barcelona), which the department will allocate 866,089.11 euros this year for the «Living in Digital» project with the aim of training young inmates in the use of information and communication technologies.
This center, inaugurated in 2008, houses 298 inmates between 18 and 21 years old and its design is intended to promote their integral development, with a modern and less rigid architectural design, designed for educational, sports, and cultural training.
