- This initiative is born as a pilot test to lower the temperature and improve the thermal sensation of passengers in metro stations
- Soon, the Catalunya station of L1 will also enjoy this new platform cooling system
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has installed air ducts to cool the platforms of the Plaça de Sants station on L5. This innovative new system in the metro network is born as a pilot test to lower the temperature on the platforms and improve the thermal comfort of passengers during train waiting times. This installation will be operational during the summer period until October and has been designed taking into account environmental and energy efficiency criteria. The pilot test also plans to install the air cooling ducts at the Catalunya metro station on L1 in the coming days.
The new system, designed by the company specialized in air diffusion solutions through textile ducts FabricAir, consists of two air treatment units located at the ends of the platforms with air filtration and two fans each. These machines, with a capacity of 5,500 cubic meters, push the air towards a central tube that runs the platform from side to side and expels the air through evenly spaced holes. In this way, passengers waiting on the platforms receive moving air and perceive an improvement in thermal comfort.
From now on, technicians will analyze the experience at this station and carry out the necessary studies to determine to which stations in the network this system could be extrapolated.
Improving the thermal sensation at metro stations is one of the main objectives pursued by these initiatives. In fact, in 2019, TMB already implemented a smart management digital system called RESPIRA® on all conventional lines of the metro network. This artificial intelligence platform is still operational and analyzes variables such as temperature, humidity, or air quality in real time.
TMB continues to work to lower the temperature and improve the thermal sensation of passengers at all metro stations.
