The Minister of Justice and Democratic Quality of the Generalitat, Ramon Espadaler, celebrated this week the approval by the Constitutional Court (TC) of the amnesty law and urged the judges of the Supreme Court (TS) to apply it, although he foresees that «there are many factors that indicate that it may not be so.»
He made these remarks in an interview with «Ara» collected by Europa Press, in which he stated that there is now no doubt about the constitutionality of the law, nor of the European scope, according to him.
Regarding a possible return to Spain of the former President of the Generalitat and leader of Junts, Carles Puigdemont, the minister said he wants it to happen «as soon as possible,» especially after the decision of the TC.
In relation to the behavior of the TS, Espadaler expressed that the court has shown signs of «reluctance in compliance,» but pointed out that the position of the TC makes them comply with the will of the legislator.
He agreed that the endorsement of the TC closes «to a large extent» the political crisis between Catalonia and the rest of Spain, although he said that this does not mean that the sentiment and the demands of the independents will disappear.
Efficiency Law
Asked about the implementation of the law on the efficiency of public justice, he argued that efficiency will be achieved and that workloads will be distributed differently, in addition to promoting mediation in civil and commercial matters.
He also emphasized that he consolidated the figure of peace justice and added that the law will be implemented gradually: «Transformation processes are not easy.»
Cerdán Case
Espadaler, who is also the leader of the forward units, labeled the reaction of the PSOE to the «Santos Cerdán case» as «quick and ruthless» and said that many citizens, whether or not members of the Socialist Party, feel disappointed and outraged.
He said he continues to work on the hypothesis that the President of the government, Pedro Sánchez, will finish his term, although he foresees that there will be «a lot of noise» and many problems to solve.
Relationship with Illa
Asked about the Alliance for Progress units with the PSC and whether the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, represents something similar to what was represented by CDC, Espadaler said yes.
«I think particularly President Illa represents it,» and he pointed out explicitly that many former CDC supporters see someone who defends the general interest, who does not fan the flames, dialogues, and does not fall into provocation or feed it.
